The highly anticipated release of Bethesda’s space-spaghetti game, Starfield, has been met with mixed reviews from Steam users. With over 80,000 user reviews posted, the game currently holds a Mixed rating on the platform. Bethesda, not pleased with this response, has taken the unusual step of having their developers reply to and rebut individual reviewers. While this level of engagement is commendable, it raises questions about the game’s flaws and whether these responses adequately address them.

One of the main criticisms of Starfield is the presence of loading breaks during fast travel and when moving between maps. In response to this, Bethesda developers claim that these loading screens are necessary due to the vast amount of procedurally generated data that needs to be loaded flawlessly in under 3 seconds. However, this response fails to acknowledge the frustration experienced by players and instead focuses on the technical limitations of the game. While it is true that the experience may vary based on progression and dialogue choices, the developers miss an opportunity to address the repetitive nature of the gameplay itself. Merely suggesting that players try rolling different characters with different specs does little to alleviate the feeling of sameness.

Bethesda’s developers also highlight the endgame options as a way to address player concerns. They claim that even after completing the Main Story, players can continue exploring Starfield through New Game+. While this may provide additional content, it does not address the underlying issues that players have raised. The focus on quantity rather than quality fails to acknowledge the desire for a more engaging and varied gameplay experience.

Another criticism revolves around the frustration with fast travel making the universe feel much smaller. Bethesda developers defend this decision by emphasizing the immense size of Starfield and the ability to use the Grav Drive to jump to other solar systems. However, this response overlooks the desire for a more immersive and organic exploration experience. While the option to fly freely among planets still exists, the reliance on jumping for solar system traversal undermines the sense of scale and wonder that players had hoped for.

Bethesda’s customer service teams have been actively responding to reviews, particularly those that mention the empty planets and lifeless NPCs. The developers argue that the intention of Starfield’s exploration is to evoke a feeling of smallness and overwhelming vastness. They encourage players to continue exploring and promise the discovery of worlds with resources and hidden outposts. While this may be true, it fails to address the lack of meaningful content and dynamic NPCs that players expect from an open-world game. The suggestion to get off the critical path and explore is valid, but it does not excuse the lackluster worldbuilding and character interactions.

Despite the shortcomings of Starfield, there is a unique aspect of the game that some players find enjoyable – the planetary exploration. Venturing into uncharted worlds and finding no pre-determined Content can be a cathartic experience. The absence of quest markers and loot allows players to appreciate the artistry and procedural generation of the game’s setting. However, this aspect of the game is often overshadowed by the focus on traditional gameplay elements. Perhaps embracing the game as a walking simulator, where the emphasis is on the environment and atmosphere, could provide a more fulfilling experience.

Starfield’s mixed reception highlights the need for Bethesda to address the valid criticisms raised by players. While their response to individual reviewers is commendable, it often falls short of acknowledging and rectifying the game’s flaws. The loading breaks, repetitive gameplay, lackluster NPCs, and the reliance on fast travel all contribute to the overall disappointment expressed by players. However, the game’s potential for immersive planetary exploration should not be overlooked. By shifting the focus to this unique aspect and prioritizing meaningful content and engaging interactions, Bethesda has the opportunity to turn around the perception of Starfield and provide a more satisfying gaming experience.
