Sony may be preparing to launch an updated version of its PS5 DualSense controller, according to a now-deleted listing on the Canadian Best Buy store. The listing revealed a V2 PlayStation gamepad that boasted an “exceptional 12-hour battery life” at maximum charge. This would be a significant improvement over the existing DualSense controller, which typically provides 7-8 hours of gameplay. The V2 controller is priced at CAD 89.99 (about Rs. 5,580) and is said to include a click-in charging station, allowing gamers to play for longer hours and easily store the controller when not in use.

Although the DualSense V2 controller appears similar to its predecessor on the surface, it does offer a few notable enhancements. The new controller retains the 3.5mm headphone jack, in-built microphone, haptic feedback motors, and adaptive triggers for a more immersive gaming experience. Additionally, it maintains the same weight of 280 grams. However, unlike the pricier DualSense Edge range of hybrid controllers, the V2 version does not provide customizable back buttons or swappable thumbsticks.

It is important to note that the Best Buy listing may not have included all the specifications of the DualSense V2 controller, and Sony has yet to officially confirm or announce its release. The company did not mention the updated controller during its CES 2024 presentation, which instead featured new colorways for the PS5 consoles. These colorways, including blue, silver, and red, showcased a metallic shimmer. While not explicitly stated, it is likely that Sony will offer separate side plates for purchase in the future.

In November, Sony filed a patent for a potential redesign of the DualSense controller. The patent suggests that the updated controller could leverage AI assistance to learn player behavior and illuminate its buttons, triggers, and analog sticks to provide assistance when players are stuck on a puzzle or difficult section of a game. Another innovative feature mentioned in the patent is the use of the PS5 controller’s touchpad as an additional display to visually show game hints. However, it is worth noting that the filing of a patent does not necessarily indicate that the concept will be realized.

Apart from the potential release of the updated DualSense controller, PlayStation recently announced new additions to its lineup of free games for higher-tier PS Plus subscriptions. The collection includes popular titles such as the acclaimed Resident Evil 2 remake, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, and Just Cause 3. It is worth mentioning that the prices of annual PS Plus memberships were raised by Sony last year.

Sony’s continuous efforts to improve and innovate in the gaming industry are evident. The rumored release of the DualSense V2 controller showcases the company’s dedication to providing gamers with enhanced gaming experiences. While not all features mentioned in patents may come to fruition, Sony’s commitment to pushing boundaries and standing out from the competition is commendable.

Although details regarding the updated DualSense controller remain uncertain, Sony’s potential release of the DualSense V2 with a longer battery life and convenient charging station is an exciting prospect for gamers. With its commitment to innovation and a growing lineup of free games, Sony’s PlayStation continues to capture the attention of gamers worldwide.
