OpenAI has recently unveiled the GPT Store, allowing users to share their custom chatbots with others who are subscribed to ChatGPT Plus. The launch of this marketplace comes after a period of uncertainty, caused by the firing and subsequent reinstatement of CEO Sam Altman in late 2023. While the GPT Store is reminiscent of app marketplaces found on smartphones, it currently acts more as a comprehensive directory of modified ChatGPT models.
The GPT acronym in ChatGPT stands for “generative pretrained transformers.” However, within the context of the GPT Store, it refers to a unique version of ChatGPT with additional parameters and enhanced training data. It is important to note that only subscribers of ChatGPT Plus, who pay a monthly fee of $20, can create and utilize these GPTs. These models also come equipped with web browsing capabilities, mirroring the functionality of OpenAI’s GPT-4 model.
Before you can add your custom chatbot to the GPT Store, you must first create one. No prior specialized knowledge or coding experience is necessary to begin this process. If you want to learn more about how to develop GPTs, refer to a previous article that discusses the methodology I employed to create Reece’s Replica. By feeding the system with 50 of my own articles as training data, I enabled the bot to emulate my writing style and tone.
However, it is essential to exercise caution when uploading custom data, as it may be accessible to all ChatGPT Plus subscribers. Therefore, refrain from sharing any confidential or sensitive information via this platform. When you are ready to make your custom chatbot available to the public, visit the ChatGPT homepage and select “Explore GPTs” on the left side of the screen. Next, navigate to “My GPTs” located in the top right corner. To publish your creation, click on the pencil icon and proceed to the Preview section to verify the potential output. If everything looks satisfactory, save your changes by clicking “Save” in the right corner, select the “Everyone” option for publication, and confirm your selection.
Here are some useful tips to help you embark on your journey with the GPT Store:
1. Experiment with Different Training Data: To enhance the capabilities of your chatbot, consider providing it with a diverse range of training data. This will enable your GPT to respond effectively to various prompts and contribute to a more engaging user experience.
2. Seek Feedback and Iteration: Don’t hesitate to gather feedback from users who interact with your chatbot. Encourage them to provide input on areas of improvement. Iterating and refining your GPT based on user feedback will help shape a better-functioning chatbot over time.
3. Privacy and Security: In the process of sharing your GPT, ensure that you do not include any sensitive or private information within your training data. Prioritize the privacy and security of both yourself and your users throughout the entire process.
4. Stay Active in the Community: Engage with the ChatGPT Plus subscriber community regularly. Participate in forums, discussions, and online groups to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and gain inspiration from other users. Collaboration and collective learning can lead to breakthroughs and advancements in the field of AI chatbots.
The GPT Store offers an exciting opportunity for ChatGPT Plus subscribers to showcase their custom chatbots to a wider audience. By following the necessary steps to list your GPT and embracing the feedback from users, you can contribute to the growth of AI chatbot technology while ensuring the protection of privacy and security. Stay engaged with the community, experiment with different training data, and enjoy the process of improving your chatbot’s performance.
