WhatsApp, the popular end-to-end encryption (E2EE) messaging platform, is gearing up to introduce support for third-party messages. A leaked image has surfaced recently, offering a sneak peek into the new interface design.
Implications of the Feature
The leaked image hints that the new feature might initially roll out in Europe. This move is in compliance with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), set to be enforced on March 6. The implementation of cross-platform messaging is a key requirement under this new legislation.
The leaked screenshot, shared via a WABetaInfo report, unveils the addition of a chat interoperability feature in the upcoming WhatsApp build version 2.24.5.18. This feature, also called third-party chats, will enable users to exchange messages with individuals on Signal, Telegram, or other messaging apps directly from WhatsApp, eliminating the need to download additional apps.
Interface Overview
In the leaked image, a header titled “Third-party chats” is visible. The screen seems to be an opt-in page, featuring a button at the bottom to activate the feature. Several warnings are displayed in the middle of the page, cautioning users about using third-party apps with potentially different encryption standards, heightened risks of spam/scams, and varying data privacy policies.
WhatsApp’s Engineering Director, Dick Brouwer, has previously confirmed the development of this feature, indicating ongoing work on its implementation. He noted that these cross-platform chats would be segregated from the platform’s E2EE protected conversations. Furthermore, WhatsApp is reportedly in the process of documenting its client-server protocol to facilitate seamless connectivity with other messaging services.
As WhatsApp prepares to introduce third-party chat support, users can anticipate a more integrated and interconnected messaging experience.
