8BitDo has released a new mechanical keyboard that pays homage to the iconic design of the Commodore 64. Priced at $109.99, the Retro Mechanical Keyboard features chunky brown keycaps with double-shot legends and a rainbow logo reminiscent of the classic computer. The keyboard comes equipped with clicky Kailh Box White V2 switches, which can be easily swapped out for a quieter alternative. Users have the option to connect the keyboard via USB, Bluetooth, or a 2.4GHz dongle, providing flexibility for different setups. Additionally, a built-in volume dial is located at the top left of the keyboard for convenient control.
The Retro Mechanical Keyboard includes programmable “Super Buttons” that resemble the A and B buttons of the Nintendo Entertainment System controller, along with a small joystick called the “Super Stick.” These accessories, similar to the ones found in 8BitDo’s previous NES keyboard, are wired and plug into the top of the keyboard via 3.5mm jacks. Despite its vintage design, the keyboard adopts a modern tenkeyless form factor, omitting the numpad while maintaining a traditional layout. Surprisingly, unlike the original Commodore 64, this keyboard does not feature RGB lighting, staying true to its retro roots.
While the Retro Mechanical Keyboard replicates the aesthetic of the Commodore 64, it diverges in key features. The original Commodore 64 utilized Mitsumi hybrid switches, a combination of rubber dome and mechanical switch, contrary to the clicky Kailh Box White V2 switches in 8BitDo’s version. Keyboard enthusiasts interested in exploring the internals of the original Commodore 64 can refer to Retro keyboard YouTuber Chyrosran22’s review of the Commodore 64C, a variant with a lighter color scheme.
8BitDo’s Commodore 64 Edition Retro Mechanical Keyboard offers a nostalgic nod to the past while incorporating modern features for usability and convenience. With its unique design, versatile connectivity options, and programmable buttons, this keyboard appeals to retro enthusiasts and tech-savvy users alike. Whether you’re a fan of vintage computers or simply appreciate a well-crafted mechanical keyboard, the Retro Mechanical Keyboard is sure to make a statement on any desktop setup.
