Dyson has recently introduced a new feature called CleanTrace, which utilizes your smartphone’s augmented reality sensors to digitally highlight areas that have been vacuumed. This innovative feature aims to help users identify spots that may have been missed during the cleaning process. The technology works by attaching your phone to the vacuum, utilizing the lidar scanner present in iPhone 12 Pro or Pro Max models.
According to Dyson, CleanTrace was developed to address the inefficiencies and inconsistencies often seen in traditional vacuuming practices. The company’s research indicates that many users tend to repeatedly vacuum the same areas while inadvertently overlooking others. This insight was gleaned from years of data collection on user cleaning habits and patterns.
CleanTrace is designed to work in conjunction with the Dyson Gen5detect model, which is currently the only vacuum in Dyson’s lineup compatible with the smartphone attachment. While the cost of the accessory has not yet been disclosed, Dyson plans to include the feature as a free update in its mobile app, set to launch in June.
Despite its innovative concept, some aspects of CleanTrace raise questions. The Gen5detect vacuum already comes equipped with features to detect dust and debris, such as a green headlight to illuminate dirt. It remains unclear whether the app utilizes data from the vacuum itself to verify thorough cleaning, potentially limiting its effectiveness.
One notable limitation of CleanTrace is its exclusivity to the Gen5detect model, as it is not compatible with other Dyson vacuums or those from different brands. The technology showcased in Dyson’s illustrations hints at the possibility of third-party developers creating similar apps with customizable features, providing users with greater flexibility and choice.
Dyson’s CleanTrace feature represents a step forward in leveraging augmented reality technology for household cleaning tasks. While there are areas for improvement and potential expansion, the concept has the potential to enhance the cleaning experience for users. As technology continues to evolve, innovations like CleanTrace could become more prevalent in the realm of home appliances.
