The demand for AI chatbots and image generators is on the rise, but the infrastructure needed to support these technologies goes beyond just flashy GPUs. Server cabinets, often overlooked, play a crucial role in storing GPU systems. However, the process of acquiring the right server cabinets can sometimes lead to costly mistakes. CoreWeave, for example, once ordered 1,400 of the wrong cabinets, resulting in significant delays due to supply chain backups. As Chief Operating Officer Venturo explains, the fast-paced nature of building infrastructure can lead to failures in the process, which may not be realized until it’s too late.

Creative Solutions and Flexibility

In the face of challenges, CoreWeave has demonstrated shrewdness and flexibility. When faced with delays in receiving new gear, the company turned to the “gray market” for used cabinets, networking switches, and routers. Although the reliability of used parts may be questionable, the urgency of the AI boom forced CoreWeave to think outside the box. This proactive approach helped the company overcome obstacles and deliver results for its partners.

Lessons from past projects have informed CoreWeave’s standard procedures today. The company has opted to pay a premium for custom manufacturing of fiber-optic cables to streamline installation processes. In instances where shipments were held up at customs, CoreWeave began pushing orders through multiple alternate ports to avoid delays. To prevent shortages, the company now orders surplus parts, ensuring readiness for future projects.

Despite its successes, CoreWeave has faced challenges along the way. Hasty actions, such as firing up too many GPUs at once, have led to unwanted consequences, such as electrical components blowing out and an unpleasant smell lingering in the data center. However, these setbacks have not deterred the company from pursuing innovative solutions and improvements in its operations.

Data Center Technicians: The Backbone of Operations

At the heart of CoreWeave’s operations are its data center technicians. These skilled professionals operate like a special operations unit, traveling from site to site to set up new data centers efficiently. Venturo emphasizes the importance of this team, highlighting their dedication and critical role in the company’s success. Despite the challenges and setbacks faced by CoreWeave, its commitment to innovation and flexibility have enabled it to overcome obstacles and deliver cutting-edge AI infrastructure.
