Instagram has recently introduced a new feature called “limits,” which allows users to hide direct messages and comments from accounts that may be harassing them. This feature goes beyond the existing options of hiding content from recent followers or accounts that do not follow you. With limits, users can now mute incoming messages from everyone except those on their close friends list.

Initially rolled out to help creators deal with harassment campaigns, the limits feature is available for anyone facing unwanted messages and comments from bullies and other malicious actors. By limiting interactions to close friends only, users will only see direct messages, tags, and mentions from those on their list. Accounts not on the close friends list can still interact with posts, but this activity will not be visible to the user who has set limits. Additionally, the restricted accounts will not be notified that their content has been hidden.

Users have the option to choose whether to view or ignore limited comments and direct messages. The limits can be set for up to four weeks at a time, with the ability to extend the duration if needed. To enable limits, users can tap on their profile, open the hamburger menu in the top-right corner, and select “Limited interactions.” From there, they can toggle on limits for accounts that are not following them, recent followers, or everyone except close friends.

Instagram is also enhancing its restrict feature, allowing users to prevent a specific account from tagging or mentioning them, in addition to hiding their comments. These updates come at a time when Instagram is under increased scrutiny from the US government regarding the safety of its young users. Meta, the parent company of Instagram, recently implemented a feature that prevents adults from messaging minors on Instagram and Facebook by default. Furthermore, the company has taken measures to hide content related to suicide and eating disorders from teenage users on both platforms.

Instagram’s introduction of the limits feature is a step towards creating a safer and more supportive environment for its users, particularly those who may be experiencing harassment or unwanted interactions. It provides users with more control over their online experience and promotes a sense of security within the Instagram community. The platform’s continued efforts to enhance safety features demonstrate a commitment to protecting its users, especially young individuals who are vulnerable to online threats.
