Optical spectrometers have long been valued for their versatility in producing and measuring light properties across the electromagnetic spectrum. Traditionally, these instruments have been associated with advanced optical components and complex mechanisms, resulting in bulky and expensive designs that limit their accessibility. Recent efforts by electronics engineers, however, are aimed at developing compact and affordable optical spectrometers that can be easily deployed on a larger scale.

Researchers at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and other Chinese institutes have introduced a new micro-sized, portable, and cost-effective optical spectrometer. This innovative device, as described in a paper in Nature Electronics, is based on an organic photodetector with a bias-tunable spectral response. Unlike conventional spectrometers, this miniaturized version offers the potential for use in portable and wearable applications, expanding the reach of optical spectrometry beyond specialized facilities.

The newly developed optical spectrometer incorporates a novel method for manipulating the wavelength-dependent location of photocarrier generation in photodiodes. By combining a trilayer contact, a Schottky diode, and an organic ternary bulk heterojunction, the researchers created a photomultiplication-type organic photodetector (PM-OPD). The device boasts a footprint of 0.0004 cm² and can operate across the entire visible wavelength with a sub-5-nm resolution, enabled by a reconstruction algorithm for analyzing the collected recordings.

In testing, the miniaturized optical spectrometer demonstrated exceptional performance, achieving high-resolution operation across the visible spectrum regime (~400–760 nm) and being utilized to fabricate an 8 x 8 spectroscopic sensor array for hyperspectral imaging. This technique, which detects unique spectral signatures of objects across the electromagnetic spectrum, showcases the potential of the new design for advancing research and medical practices.
