AMD has taken a cautious step by delaying the launch of its new Zen 5 processors, including the highly anticipated Ryzen 9 9950X. The decision to delay the launch by one to two weeks was made “out of an abundance of caution,” according to a spokesperson from AMD.
Reason for Delay
The reason for the delay is not due to any issues with the actual chips, but rather because some of the chips did not go through all of the proper testing procedures. This has led AMD to take the necessary steps to ensure that all the chips meet their full quality expectations before they are released to the market.
In a statement provided by AMD’s Senior Vice President of Computing and Graphics, Jack Huynh, it was mentioned that the initial production units that were shipped to channel partners did not meet the company’s quality expectations. As a result, AMD is working with its channel partners to replace these units with fresh ones to maintain the highest quality experience for users.
AMD has already recalled the chips that required additional testing before being released for sale. The testing process is reportedly going smoothly, and AMD’s engineers are confident that there will not be any further delays in the launch of the processors.
Comparison with Intel
The decision by AMD to be extra cautious in ensuring the quality of its processors is understandable, especially in light of Intel’s recent issues with its 13th and 14th Gen desktop processors. Intel is currently dealing with unstable processors, such as the Core i9-13900K and i9-14900K, which have been causing problems for users. Intel has identified the root cause of the issue, but a patch won’t be available until August, leaving users with no immediate solution.
In addition to the desktop processors, AMD is also preparing to launch its Zen 5 laptop chips, codenamed Strix Point. One of the new chips in this lineup is the Ryzen AI 9 HX 375, which boasts a powerful 55 TOPS NPU, indicating AMD’s commitment to delivering high-performance chips across its product range.
