The Chinese government recently expressed disapproval of the European Union’s decision to lower tariffs on electric vehicle imports, including those from major automakers like Tesla. According to a Ministry of Commerce spokesperson, Beijing believes that the EU’s investigation into China’s subsidies for the electric vehicle industry has led to biased conclusions. The spokesperson also accused the EU of promoting unfair competition and stated that China would take all necessary measures to protect the interests of Chinese companies.
The European Commission, the EU’s executive body, announced that it would reduce import duties on electric vehicle manufacturers bringing cars into the EU from China. This decision included lowering tariffs on Tesla vehicles to 9%, a significant decrease from the previously expected 20.8% rate. Additionally, the EU imposed tariffs on other Chinese electric car makers, such as BYD, SAIC, and Geely. These actions were in response to concerns that China’s subsidies for the electric vehicle industry were distorting competition in Europe.
In light of the EU’s decision, the Chinese Commerce Ministry stated that both the government and the country’s EV industry had submitted extensive legal documents and evidence to defend against the EU’s allegations. However, the Ministry criticized the EU for not fully considering China’s perspectives in its final ruling. The EU’s actions were seen as unilateral and based on facts identified solely by the EU, rather than through mutual agreement between the parties involved.
Despite the tensions arising from the tariffs, the Chinese government expressed hope for resolving any trade disputes with the EU through practical actions and dialogue. Both parties aimed to avoid an escalation of trade frictions and work towards a mutual understanding on issues related to the electric vehicle industry. The Ministry emphasized the importance of cooperation and fair treatment in international trade relations to ensure a stable global automotive supply chain.
