WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform, is once again stepping up its game when it comes to user privacy. In a recent announcement, Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, revealed the launch of the Secret Code feature for locked chats. This new feature allows users to hide their sensitive conversations behind a password or phrase, providing an extra layer of security and ensuring that your private messages remain private.
With the Secret Code feature, you no longer have to worry about prying eyes when you pass your phone to a friend or if your phone falls into the wrong hands. By selecting a chat and locking it with a secret code, you can ensure that it remains hidden from the main chat list. This means that even if someone gains access to your phone, they won’t be able to see these locked chats unless they enter the secret code.
Setting up the Secret Code feature is quick and straightforward. After opening the list of locked chats, you can access the chat lock settings by tapping the three-dot menu at the top. From there, you can toggle the “Hide locked chats” option and enter a secret code of your choosing. It is recommended to choose a code that is easy for you to remember but difficult for others to guess.
Once you’ve set the secret code, your locked chats will no longer be visible in the main chat window. WhatsApp has removed the shortcut for locked chats that was previously shown when swiping down on the chat screen. To access your locked chats, you can use your fingerprint or Face ID, adding an extra level of convenience.
If you need to access your locked chats, there is a simple way to do so. By entering the same secret code in the search bar, you can reveal the conversations protected by the Chat Lock feature. However, it’s important to note that this will only show the locked chats until you exit the app. This ensures that your privacy is maintained even if someone else has physical access to your phone.
If you no longer need to hide the presence of your chats, WhatsApp provides an option to revert back to the original Chat Lock feature. To do this, simply open the list of locked chats using your secret code and tap on the three-dot menu. From there, you can toggle the “Hide locked chats” option off, disabling the Secret Code feature.
The Secret Code feature is currently being rolled out to users, starting with the beta version of the app for Android smartphones. However, WhatsApp has assured that it will be available globally in the coming months. This demonstrates the company’s commitment to ensuring the privacy and security of its users across the globe.
While the Secret Code feature is currently available for Android smartphones, there is no news yet regarding its availability on WhatsApp for Desktop.
