A new feature on X (formerly known as Twitter) has caught the attention of users, as reports suggest that the platform is testing a downvoting option for posts on iPhone. This feature, which may appear as a ‘dislike’ button in the form of a heartbroken icon, is aimed at increasing user engagement. The discovery of code references related to this feature indicates that testing is ongoing, with the possibility of being introduced soon on the X app for iOS users.
Users on social media, such as @aaronp613, have shared insights into the potential downvoting feature on X. Strings of text found in the app’s code hint at a heartbroken emoji-style icon for dislikes, similar to the existing like option represented by a heart icon. The code references include prompts such as “Do you want to downvote this post?” and “Downvote this post.”
There are still uncertainties surrounding the downvoting feature, as it is unclear whether the option will be available for both posts and replies. The code currently only mentions “posts,” leaving room for speculation on the scope of the downvoting ability. It was initially announced in 2021 as part of a research experiment that added upvote and downvote options for replies. However, recent reports suggest that downvotes are not public, unlike likes, which were made hidden in a recent update.
A user named @P4mui shared a video clip showcasing the alleged downvoting option in action. However, the clip indicates that the feature is limited to replies and not available for posts on the platform. In addition to the rumored downvoting feature, X recently made significant changes, such as hiding likes from the platform. This decision means that posts liked by a user will no longer be visible on their profile under the likes tab, as the entire section has been removed. These changes are part of the series of updates introduced on the microblogging platform following Elon Musk’s takeover in 2022.
The potential introduction of a downvoting feature on X’s iPhone app could have significant implications for user engagement and interactions on the platform. As testing and development continue, users can expect further updates and changes to enhance their experience on X.
