Apple is taking legal action against a former employee, Andrew Aude, for allegedly leaking confidential information to journalists and employees of other companies. The lawsuit, filed in California state court, accuses Aude of sharing details about Apple’s Journal app, the development of the VisionOS headset, regulatory compliance strategies, employee headcounts, and product hardware characteristics. Apple claims that Aude admitted to leaking information to “kill” products and features that he disagreed with.

According to the lawsuit, Aude communicated with a Wall Street Journal journalist over 1,400 times using an encrypted messaging app. He also shared a list of finalized features for Apple’s Journal app in a phone call that led to a story about the unreleased app’s features appearing in The Wall Street Journal. Additionally, Aude sent over 10,000 text messages to a journalist at The Information and traveled to meet her in person.

Apple claims that the leaks were not discovered until late 2023. When confronted by Apple representatives, Aude initially denied his involvement and lied about having his Apple-issued iPhone with him. However, during a break in the meeting, Aude allegedly deleted significant evidence from his device, including the Signal app. In a second meeting, Aude finally admitted to leaking information about Apple’s strategies, unannounced products, development policies, and hardware characteristics to at least two journalists. He was subsequently fired by Apple.

Apple’s lawsuit seeks a jury trial, damages, restitution, disgorgement of bonuses and stock options, and an order directing Aude to cease the unauthorized disclosure of confidential information. The company is taking a strong stance against employees who violate their trust and confidentiality agreements by leaking sensitive information to the media and other companies.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding confidentiality and protecting sensitive information within organizations.
