AT&T recently announced that it is currently investigating a data breach that occurred two weeks ago. The breach resulted in the publication of millions of customers’ data on the dark web, a hidden part of the internet that can only be accessed through special software. As a response, the company has reset the passcodes of the 7.6 million current users impacted by the breach and is actively reaching out to them. Additionally, AT&T is also contacting the 65.4 million former account holders whose data was compromised.

The preliminary review conducted by AT&T revealed that the leaked data dates back to around 2019 or earlier. The information exposed includes personal details such as names, home addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers. However, it is important to note that the data set does not contain any personal financial information or call history.

AT&T has advised all users who may have been impacted by the breach to be on high alert. Affected users will receive an email notification and are encouraged to set up fraud alert accounts. Furthermore, they should monitor their account activity and credit reports closely for any suspicious behavior. Despite the breach, AT&T assures its customers that the incident has not had a significant impact on its operations.

This is not the first time that AT&T has faced challenges with its services. In February, AT&T customers experienced a cellular outage that lasted for hours. The company clarified that the outage was due to a system issue and not a cyberattack. Following this incident, CEO John Stankey issued an apology to affected customers and provided credits to make amends.

The recent data breach at AT&T has raised concerns about the security of customer information. As investigations continue, it is crucial for users to take proactive steps to protect their personal data and remain vigilant against potential fraud. AT&T, on its part, is working to address the breach and ensure the safety of its customers’ information in the future.
