The gaming laptop market is heating up as Nvidia and AMD are preparing to launch a new line of gaming laptops that will incorporate AI Copilot Plus features recently announced by Microsoft for Qualcomm-powered laptops. At Computex, Nvidia hinted at the upcoming release of “RTX AI PC” laptops from Asus and MSI, which will eventually feature Copilot Plus PC capabilities. These laptops will come equipped with up to GeForce RTX 4070 GPUs and power-efficient systems-on-a-chip with Windows 11 AI PC features.

Nvidia has confirmed that these new laptops will be powered by AMD’s latest Strix CPUs, although AMD has not officially provided details about these laptop CPUs yet. The announcement is expected to be made during AMD’s keynote address. There is a suggestion from Nvidia that the initial AMD-powered Copilot Plus PCs may not have access to Microsoft’s latest AI features at launch. However, Nvidia has assured that a free update to Copilot+ PC experiences will be provided once it becomes available.

Nvidia is actively trying to stay relevant in the AI-powered laptop market amid Microsoft’s move towards utilizing NPUs for AI models. Nvidia is focusing on making its GPUs valuable in the AI landscape on PCs by promoting its “RTX AI laptops” branding. The company claims that its GPUs are more proficient at running heavy AI workloads compared to NPUs. Nvidia is set to release an RTX AI Toolkit in June, which will include tools and SDKs for model customization, optimization, and deployment, aiming to provide developers with the necessary resources to enhance AI performance.

Collaboration with Microsoft on AI Models

Nvidia is working closely with Microsoft to integrate AI models into Windows 11, providing developers with API access to GPU-accelerated small language models (SLMs). These models enable retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) capabilities powered by Windows Copilot Runtime. Microsoft’s Copilot Runtime, announced at Build last month, aims to simplify the integration of AI-powered features into applications, utilizing NPU hardware for acceleration or Nvidia GPUs for enhanced performance.

Performance Comparison between NPUs and GPUs

Currently, NPUs offer approximately 40 TOPS of performance, while Nvidia’s PC GPUs can handle over 1,000 TOPS for AI acceleration. This significant difference in performance highlights the varying capabilities of NPUs and GPUs. NPUs are designed for smaller models and emphasize high power efficiency in laptops, whereas GPUs excel in handling larger models with superior performance in PC desktops where battery life is not a concern.

The collaboration between Nvidia and AMD to integrate advanced AI features into gaming laptops signifies a significant development in the gaming industry. The utilization of GPUs for AI processing in laptops presents new opportunities for developers to enhance performance and create innovative AI-powered applications.
