As the highly-anticipated PC release of Ghost of Tsushima approaches, fans are eagerly awaiting the chance to explore the Director’s Cut on a new platform. However, a recent announcement from developers Nixxes and Sucker Punch has shed light on a potential limitation for multiplayer functionality on Steam Deck. Despite the exciting prospect of experiencing the main game and expansion content on PC, it seems that the integration of a PlayStation Network (PSN) account login will impact the ability to access certain multiplayer features.
One of the main points clarified by the developers is that players will not be required to create or sign in with a PSN account to enjoy Ghost of Tsushima’s single-player campaign or the Iki Island expansion. This decision comes in response to past controversies surrounding mandatory PSN logins for multiplayer modes, such as the infamous Helldivers 2 debacle. While the single-player experience remains unaffected, the same cannot be said for the co-op Legends mode.
Despite Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut being technically compatible with Steam Deck for solo play, the presence of multiplayer elements will result in the game being labeled as “Unsupported” on the platform. According to the developers, the inability to access PSN integrated features necessary for multiplayer will prevent the co-op mode from functioning on Steam Deck. This revelation may come as a disappointment to players hoping to enjoy online play on the go.
In addition to the multiplayer restrictions on Steam Deck, the implementation of cross-play between PlayStation and PC users will be available in a beta format at launch. While functional, this feature will not automatically match players across different platforms, requiring manual invites to join multiplayer sessions. This limitation may pose challenges for solo players seeking quick matchmaking and seamless gaming experiences.
The announcement also highlights the issue of global distribution for Ghost of Tsushima’s PC port, as the game will not be available for purchase on Steam in nearly 180 countries. This limitation is primarily due to the PSN login requirement for Legends mode, which has led to similar restrictions in other titles like Helldivers 2. The exclusion of countries, including Japan where the game is set, raises questions about the necessity of a separate PSN login for multiplayer access.
The upcoming PC release of Ghost of Tsushima faces challenges in delivering a seamless multiplayer experience on Steam Deck. While the single-player content remains unaffected by PSN login requirements, the integration of multiplayer features has led to limitations on certain platforms. As players anticipate the Director’s Cut with its expansion and co-op modes, the impact of these restrictions on accessibility and cross-play functionality may shape the overall gaming experience for Ghost of Tsushima enthusiasts.
