Sony has officially confirmed that the PlayStation VR2 headset will be adding official PC support through a wired adapter starting on August 7th. This adapter will cost £50/$60, allowing users to connect their VR2 headset to a PC and play virtual reality games on platforms like SteamVR.
While the PlayStation VR2 PC adapter will support SteamVR out of the box, it is important to note that not all features of the VR2 headset will be supported on PC. Some key features, such as HDR support, eye-tracking, and headset feedback, will not work when using the adapter. Additionally, the handheld controllers’ DualSense-based adaptive triggers and haptic feedback will also be limited to simple rumble.
Despite these limitations, there are still several features of the VR2 headset that will be functional on PC. The OLED displays, see-through view, finger-touch detection on the controllers, and 3D audio in some games will still be available when playing VR games on a PC using the adapter.
For current VR2 owners, the ability to play VR games on a PC without purchasing a new headset may be appealing. However, when comparing the VR2 to other PC offerings such as the Meta Quest 3, which is already cheaper and offers similar features due to the limitations of the adapter, the combined cost of the VR2 and the adapter may make it a harder sell for some users.
Ultimately, whether the PlayStation VR2 PC adapter is worth the price will depend on individual preferences and priorities. While the adapter allows VR2 owners to enjoy their headset on a PC, the limitations in features may deter some users. For those who are considering purchasing a VR headset for PC gaming, it is important to weigh the cost of the VR2 and the adapter against other options on the market to make an informed decision.
