TikTok seems to be following in Instagram’s footsteps once again by implementing a new feature called “Collaboration.” This feature allows users to tag collaborators on a post, linking their profiles to the post details. It appears that TikTok is taking inspiration from Instagram’s collaborative posts, but with some variations.
According to app researcher Radu Oncescu, creators will have the ability to invite up to 5 other creators to collaborate on a post. Users will be prompted to approve collaborator listings and can decline those they do not wish to be included. Additionally, users will have the option to remove themselves as collaborators after the fact. Collaborator posts will be visible on both the creator and collaborator profiles, although only the creator will have the ability to edit the post. Each user can invite others to collaborate up to four times per month.
While TikTok’s Collaboration feature is reminiscent of Instagram’s functionality, there are some differences. On Instagram, users can add up to six collaborators to a post, with no limit on the number of collaborative posts per month. Despite the similarities, TikTok’s version could provide value by offering a new way to engage with audiences, expand reach, and facilitate affiliate campaigns. It could also serve as a platform for users to showcase their brand to a wider audience through partner accounts.
Although the Collaboration feature has not yet been officially released, it is currently undergoing late-stage testing. This suggests that the feature will be rolled out to users in the near future. As social media platforms continue to borrow features from one another, it will be interesting to see how TikTok users embrace and utilize the new Collaboration option.
