Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader underwent a monumental update, with a comprehensive list of changes that span a massive 17,000 words. The overhaul, described as “engrossing, obscure, and absolutely exhausting” in a previous review, has brought about numerous alterations to improve the overall gameplay experience.
Among the myriad of modifications included in the update, developers Owlcat have highlighted several key features. These include a brand new full voiceover for the Prologue and companion interactions, new visual effects and icons, narrative tweaks, and additional reactivity options. Furthermore, the update addresses issues such as broken quests and dialogues, incorrect epilogues, and malfunctioning abilities and items that resulted in imbalanced gameplay.
In addition to resolving existing issues, the update introduces balance adjustments across various aspects of the game. This includes buffs to survivability and damage for Space Marines, nerfs for Officers, weapon balance changes, encounter adjustments, and recalculations of stats and difficulty modifiers. These modifications aim to provide a smoother and more engaging gameplay experience for players.
Apart from gameplay enhancements, the update also focuses on optimizing performance and reducing instances of lag or slowdown. Improvements to NPC AI, decreased likelihood of friendly fire, and unnecessary triggering of attacks, as well as quality of life UI enhancements, have been implemented to streamline the overall gaming experience.
With the extensive changes introduced in the update, players are advised to rebuild their party to adapt to the new gameplay dynamics. To facilitate this transition, all current party members in existing saves are granted a free respec to reallocate their abilities and skills. Additionally, players who have not yet unlocked the ability to respec will receive a one-time free respec option within the game.
While this update is labeled as the “first major update” by the developers, it raises questions about the distinction between updates and patches. The sheer scale of changes introduced in this update suggests a significant overhaul that has redefined the gameplay experience. As a result, all previous major updates are now considered minor in comparison to the magnitude of this latest update.
