However, a groundbreaking new system called SharedNeRF is revolutionizing this process by allowing remote users to manipulate a 3D view of the scene, aiding in complex tasks such as debugging intricate hardware. Developed by Mose Sakashita, a doctoral student in information science, SharedNeRF combines two graphics rendering techniques to provide a unique collaborative experience.

SharedNeRF leverages the use of two distinct graphics rendering techniques – one that is slow but photorealistic, and another that is fast but less precise. By incorporating these methods, the system enables remote users to immerse themselves in the physical space of the collaborator, making tasks that were previously challenging to convey through traditional video-based systems much more manageable.

According to Sakashita, SharedNeRF represents a significant paradigm shift in remote collaboration, opening up possibilities for working on tasks that were previously deemed impossible. The system allows users to engage in activities that require a high level of detail and multiple angles, which were traditionally difficult to achieve through conventional conferencing methods.

Sakashita will be showcasing the SharedNeRF system at the upcoming Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) CHI conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems. Titled “SharedNeRF: Leveraging Photorealistic and View Dependent Rendering for Real-time and Remote Collaboration,” the system has already garnered recognition with an honorable mention. This acknowledgment highlights the innovative nature of SharedNeRF in addressing issues related to remote collaboration.

The system developed by Sakashita focuses on leveraging cutting-edge technology to support remote collaboration efforts. By utilizing a rendering method known as a neural radiance field (NeRF), SharedNeRF creates realistic 3D representations of scenes using 2D images. This approach enables users to interact with the scene from various angles, complete with reflections, textures, and transparent objects.

One of the key features of SharedNeRF is its ability to render dynamic scenes in real-time. By combining the detailed visuals generated by NeRF with point cloud rendering, the system can convey moving elements within the scene with minimal delay. This ensures that remote users can experience the scene as if they were physically present, enhancing the collaborative process.

Through testing with volunteers on collaborative projects, SharedNeRF has received positive feedback. Users appreciated the ability to independently adjust their viewpoint, zoom in and out on details, and observe real-time movements within the scene.
