In a strategic move to combat rising competition in the field of artificial intelligence services, Amazon has decided to double the value of credits it offers to some startups to leverage its cloud infrastructure. Starting July 1, startups that have raised a Series A round of funding in the past year will now be eligible for $200,000 in credits through AWS’ Activate program, up from the previous $100,000. This increase aims to attract more innovative startups to leverage Amazon’s cloud services and stay ahead in the market.

One of the main reasons behind Amazon’s decision to increase credits for startups can be attributed to the heightened competition from Microsoft in the artificial intelligence services sector. Microsoft’s Azure and Google Cloud have been growing rapidly, benefiting from the advancements in AI models. For instance, backed by Microsoft, OpenAI launched ChatGPT on Azure, attracting a wave of AI workloads. Google, on the other hand, boasts large language models like Gemini. Amazon, although a leader in the market, has been trying to catch up in generative AI through investments in companies like Anthropic.

Matt Garman, the newly appointed CEO of AWS, emphasized the importance of collaborating with startups during his recent visit to Silicon Valley. He described AI companies as AWS’ ideal customers, reaffirming the brand’s commitment to nurturing innovative startups. With the increase in credits, Amazon is striving to provide startups with the necessary resources to scale their businesses and drive growth in the competitive cloud market.

In response to Amazon’s move, Microsoft announced a partnership with Silicon Valley accelerator Y Combinator, offering participating startups $350,000 in Azure credits and access to GPUs for AI model training. This initiative has been extended to other accelerators like the AI Grant, providing startups with generous cloud credits to support their growth. Additionally, Microsoft’s Founders Hub program offers up to $150,000 in Azure credits to startups without requiring previous venture funding, further expanding its reach in the startup ecosystem.

Apart from the credit increase, Amazon has introduced a new 10-week generative AI accelerator program, allowing participants to access up to $1 million in cloud credits. This program aims to support startups in developing advanced AI models and driving innovation in the field. With these initiatives, Amazon is positioning itself as a key player in the cloud infrastructure space, offering valuable resources to startups to fuel their growth.
