Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has recently introduced a new label for artificial intelligence (AI) content detection. The previous label, “Made with AI,” has now been replaced with “AI Info.” This change comes in response to criticisms from Instagram influencers and photographers who pointed out that the old label did not align with their expectations and often lacked context.

The new “AI Info” label aims to provide users with more clarity and context about images and videos that have been edited using AI tools. Meta acknowledges that the previous label was not sufficient in communicating this information to users. By updating to the new label, the company hopes to eliminate confusion and ensure that users have a better understanding of how AI has been utilized in creating the content they see on their feeds.

Users can now click on the “AI Info” label to access more information about the content. A bottom sheet opens up, explaining that “Generative AI may have been used to create or edit content in this post.” This feature is particularly helpful for users who are not familiar with the technology, as it provides them with insights into how AI has been incorporated into the content creation process.

Meta emphasizes that it utilizes industry-standard indicators, such as the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) and the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) standards, to detect AI-generated content. The company is also committed to collaborating with other industry players to improve its AI labelling process and ensure that it accurately reflects the intent behind the content.

Despite these efforts, there are still challenges that Meta faces in accurately detecting AI-generated images. Many AI-generated images continue to go undetected by the company’s tools, raising concerns about the effectiveness of the new labelling system. Additionally, there is also a worry that the widespread usage of the “AI Info” label to flag even slightly edited images may dilute its purpose of identifying deepfakes and manipulative AI content.

Meta’s decision to update its AI content detection label to “AI Info” represents a step in the right direction towards providing users with better transparency and context regarding AI-edited content on the platform. However, it is clear that there are still areas for improvement, particularly in terms of accurately detecting AI-generated images and maintaining the integrity of the labelling system.
