WhatsApp, one of the leading instant messaging platforms, made a significant announcement recently regarding the integration of third-party chats. This decision came after the European Union implemented the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in 2022, pushing Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, to make the messaging app interoperable with other platforms. Initially, there were concerns about ensuring end-to-end encryption with third-party apps, causing delays in the implementation of this feature. However, Meta has now addressed these issues and is ready to introduce third-party chats to WhatsApp users.

Meta took an additional six months to develop the necessary technicalities for the interoperable feature, which will enable users to communicate with individuals on different messaging apps seamlessly. The same interoperable feature is also in the works for Messenger, the messaging app linked with Facebook. Meta assures users that the integration of this feature will prioritize privacy and security to the highest extent possible.

WhatsApp users can expect a new notification system that will alert them about the availability of third-party chats. Each time a new messaging app becomes accessible on WhatsApp, users will receive a notification. Moreover, an onboarding flow will be introduced to guide users on enabling third-party chats. This flow will enable users to select the third-party apps they wish to receive messages from and manage their inbox preferences. Users will have the option to keep third-party chats separate from the main inbox or merge them together. For those opting for separation, the messages will be directed to a distinct folder.

In addition to the basic messaging functionalities, users will also have access to app-specific features like message reactions, direct replies, typing indicators, and read receipts. Furthermore, WhatsApp will introduce the capability to create groups, as well as make voice and video calls by 2027. The company is working in collaboration with third-party messaging services to ensure a secure experience for WhatsApp users.

This new chapter in WhatsApp’s evolution signifies a significant step towards enhanced communication possibilities for users. The integration of third-party chats opens up a world of opportunities for users to connect with individuals on various messaging platforms, all while prioritizing privacy and security. With innovative features on the horizon and a commitment to user safety, WhatsApp’s future is looking bright.
