A shocking revelation has emerged regarding the hacker responsible for leaking in-development videos of Grand Theft Auto VI. According to reports from BBC News, the individual named Arion Kurtaj, who was part of the notorious cybercrime group Lapsus$, has been confined to a secure hospital indefinitely. The reason behind this confinement is an acute autism diagnosis, which rendered him unfit to stand trial. Due to a mental assessment, the jury had to determine whether the cybercrime was committed with criminal intent. The verdict indicated that Kurtaj was “highly motivated” to return to crime, leading to his life sentence in the hospital until he is no longer deemed dangerous.

Kurtaj’s arrest in September 2022 shed light on the Rockstar Games hack suspicions. He had previously pleaded not guilty during the trial for the crimes his cybercrime group committed against Nvidia and Uber. Startlingly, it was revealed during the trial that Kurtaj continued hacking while on bail and in police protection at a Travelodge hotel. It was in this hotel room that he executed the infamous hack, utilizing an Amazon Firestick, a television, and a smartphone. Although his laptop had been confiscated from a previous breach attack, Kurtaj managed to gain access to Rockstar’s Slack group. He then proceeded to threaten the release of the GTA 6 source code unless negotiations were conducted over the Telegram messaging app.

Kurtaj’s threat materialized when he released over 90 clips from Grand Theft Auto VI, creating arguably one of the biggest leaks in gaming history. This act of cybercrime had significant implications for Rockstar Games, impacting the thousands of hours dedicated to the game’s development and the overall morale of the team. The leaked material, though not explicitly acknowledged by Rockstar, reputedly caused $5 million worth of damage. However, Kurtaj’s defense team argued that the leaks did not substantially affect the game’s success, pointing to the overwhelming positive response to the official trailer, which garnered 62 million views within a mere 13 hours of release.

The case of Kurtaj is not an isolated incident, as the gaming industry continues to face threats from cybercriminals. Another unnamed 17-year-old male was convicted alongside Kurtaj for involvement in the cyberattack on Nvidia and cryptocurrency theft. Moreover, the recent ransomware attack on AAA game studio Insomniac Games serves as another reminder of the escalating cyber threats faced by the industry. The cybercrime group responsible for the attack leaked a staggering 1.67TB of confidential data, including a fully functioning build of the highly anticipated Wolverine game, employee emails, personal information, presentations on future releases, and sales figures.

In the face of these cybercrimes, game developers worldwide have come together to denounce the attacks and express support for the affected studios. The leaks and breaches not only disrupt the development process but also compromise the privacy and safety of individuals connected to the gaming industry. The increasing frequency and severity of cyberattacks necessitate heightened security measures and vigilance within the gaming community.

Despite the setbacks caused by the leaks, Grand Theft Auto VI remains highly anticipated by fans. The official trailer release earlier this month provided a glimpse of the game’s in-engine footage and introduced the characters Lucia and Jason. Rockstar Games aims to launch the game on the current-gen PS5 and Xbox Series S/X in 2025. As the gaming industry grapples with the consequences of cybercrime, it becomes imperative to protect the hard work and creativity of developers, ensuring that players can immerse themselves in the virtual worlds they love without compromise.
