Elon Musk, the controversial CEO of Tesla, has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons in recent years. His erratic behavior and polarizing statements have raised concerns about their impact on Tesla’s sales. According to a report by corporate reputation tracking firm Caliber, Musk’s actions are very likely to be a contributing factor in the decline of Tesla’s sales.

Caliber’s survey data revealed that Tesla’s “consideration score” has plummeted from 70 percent in November 2021 to 31 percent in January. This metric tracks consumer interest in a brand based on their willingness to buy or continue buying products and services from that brand. In contrast, rival EV manufacturers Audi, BMW, and Mercedes have seen slight increases in their consideration scores during the same period, ranging between 44-47 percent.

Elon Musk’s Approval Ratings

An analytics firm called CivicScience conducted a study on Musk’s approval ratings among US consumers. The study found that 42 percent of respondents viewed Musk unfavorably, up from 34 percent when his stake in Twitter was announced in April 2022. Musk’s conduct, which includes promoting conspiracy theories and engaging in harmful rhetoric, has come under intense scrutiny.

Caliber CEO Shahar Silbershatz stated that 83 percent of Americans associate Tesla with Musk. This association has led to a decline in Tesla’s reputation among consumers in countries such as the Netherlands, US, UK, France, and Australia. Brand valuation consultancy Brand Finance also reported a similar decline in Tesla’s reputation between 2023 and 2024.

Factors Contributing to Declining Sales

While Musk’s behavior is seen as a major factor in Tesla’s sales decline, it is not the only one. Tesla warned in January that its growth in 2024 may be notably lower than the previous year due to various factors. These factors include increasing competition from rival EV providers like Rivian and China’s BYD, manufacturing delays, and shipping disruptions.
