One of the popular AI image-generator tools identified by Stanford, an older version of Stable Diffusion, was readily accessible until it was removed by Runway ML, a company based in New York. Runway cited a “planned deprecation of research models and code” as the reason for taking down the tool. The cleanup of the LAION dataset coincides with increased scrutiny by governments worldwide on the use of technology tools for generating and distributing illicit images of children. San Francisco’s city attorney recently filed a lawsuit targeting websites facilitating the creation of AI-generated nudes of women and girls. Similarly, the messaging app Telegram faced legal action in France for its alleged role in the distribution of child sexual abuse images, leading to charges against the platform’s founder and CEO, Pavel Durov.
