In urban African communities, communication infrastructure has greatly improved the sharing of information among residents. However, the situation is quite different in rural areas where resource constraints and a lack of investment opportunities hinder reliable communication. The Upanzi Network, led by Emmanuel Ndashimye from Carnegie Mellon University Africa, is determined to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural communities by developing an opportunistic connectivity network using public transportation systems. This innovative solution aims to provide cost-efficient and accessible communication options for residents in isolated regions.
To enable communication in rural areas, the Upanzi Network combines ideas from two types of networks: the delay-tolerant network (DTN) and the named data network (NDN). The DTN allows for information to be stored temporarily until there is an opportunity for transmission. For example, buses equipped with gateway devices can collect data as they pass through various locations and store it until they reach their destinations. When the buses pass by areas where the data is needed, residents can connect to the bus and quickly download the relevant information.
The NDN, on the other hand, categorizes information for selective harvesting. By labeling packets of information with specific names such as “farming,” “health,” or “agriculture,” the bus can retrieve only the data relevant to the needs of rural communities. This approach eliminates the need for numerical identification and simplifies the retrieval process.
Expanding Connectivity Options
Moving forward, the Upanzi Network aims to enhance their connectivity network by supporting not only Wi-Fi but also Bluetooth and Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) networks. Integrating these alternative connection options will provide a more extensive and versatile network for rural residents. Although this research is still in its early stages, the Upanzi Network has ambitious plans for its implementation.
