The world of video games is constantly evolving, and one of the latest advancements in this field is the integration of generative AI into non-player characters (NPCs). These NPCs, like Bloom from French video game publisher Ubisoft, are designed to enable players to hold conversations with characters in a more realistic and engaging way. At last week’s Game Developers Conference, the industry’s AI boom was in full swing. Ubisoft’s demo of generative AI NPCs, like Bloom, was just one of the highlights of the event. The Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists also discussed deepfakes and the potential impacts that AI could have on the careers of gamemakers.

Despite the excitement surrounding the integration of generative AI into video games, there are ethical concerns that cannot be ignored. A poll conducted by GDC organizers found that nearly half of surveyed developers are already using generative AI at their companies. However, four out of five developers expressed concerns about the ethics of utilizing this technology. One of the key issues that emerged during the event was the notion of using AI for NPCs and the potential implications it could have on player experience and interaction.

Ubisoft’s demonstration of neo NPCs, powered by Nvidia technology, showcased the potential for more immersive player experiences. Players were able to engage with NPCs like Bloom to achieve in-game goals and learn more about the world of the game. These AI NPCs have been designed to be more approachable and engaging, allowing players to feel more comfortable interacting with them. By adding goals to these interactions, Ubisoft aims to encourage players to step out of their comfort zone and engage with NPCs in a more social and interactive manner.

Encouraging Social Interaction through AI NPCs

Mélanie López Malet, a senior data scientist at Ubisoft, highlights the importance of using AI NPCs to inspire social instincts in players. By creating NPCs like Bloom, who are easy to talk to and interact with, players are encouraged to open up and engage in meaningful conversations. This can be particularly beneficial for players who may feel shy or anxious in social situations, as text-based interactions can provide a more comfortable and familiar environment for communication.
