The recent release of the Beach Properties DLC for Cities: Skylines 2 has left many players disappointed and frustrated. Developers Colossal Order and publishers Paradox Interactive have issued a joint statement apologizing for the state in which the DLC was launched. The letter, signed by Colossal Order CEO Mariina Hallikainen and Paradox Interactive deputy CEO Mattias Lilja, acknowledges the shortcomings of the DLC and promises refunds to dissatisfied customers. Additionally, players who acquired the DLC through the Ultimate Edition of Skylines 2 will receive compensation in the form of three Creator Packs and three radio stations.

Despite the high expectations for the Beach Properties DLC, it failed to deliver on many fronts. Priced at £8.49 / $10, the DLC was criticized for being a mere asset pack rather than a true expansion. Players were disappointed by the lack of new features, with only a handful of new buildings and plantable foliage included in the DLC. Surprisingly, the DLC did not even feature any actual beach house assets, further adding to the dissatisfaction among players. The simultaneous release of mod tools for Skylines 2, while welcomed, was also met with criticism for being relatively basic and lacking the ability to import new assets.

Refunds and Improvements

Players who feel let down by the underwhelming Beach Properties DLC are encouraged to consult Paradox’s FAQ on how to obtain a refund. The developers have committed to making immediate and meaningful changes in their approach to game development and communication with the player base. This includes a renewed focus on improving the base game and modding tools. As a result, the release of the Bridges and Ports expansion, originally scheduled for later this year, has been delayed until 2025.

Despite the setbacks caused by the Beach Properties DLC, there is still hope for Cities: Skylines 2. An “advisory meeting” is being planned, where a select group of Cities enthusiasts will have the opportunity to question Colossal Order about Skylines 2 and suggest potential improvements. While some players remain skeptical about the developers’ ability to deliver on their promises, there is a sense of cautious optimism among the community. The developers are determined to regain the trust of their players and deliver a better gaming experience in the future.

The launch of the Beach Properties DLC for Cities: Skylines 2 has been a major misstep for both Colossal Order and Paradox Interactive. The lackluster content and performance issues have soured the player base and damaged the reputation of the game. However, with a renewed focus on improvement and communication, there is a chance for redemption. Players are encouraged to voice their concerns and suggestions for the future of Skylines 2, as the developers strive to make amends and restore faith in their flagship city-building game.
