He stated that the studio had always been resistant to the idea of the game being available on Microsoft’s subscription service, PC Game Pass. This decision comes from a place of understanding and practicality, as Vincke believes that the massive scope of Baldur’s Gate 3 justifies its price tag and enables the development team to continue making games without the need for additional monetization strategies.
Vincke goes on to explain that Baldur’s Gate 3 is a substantial and content-rich experience that can provide players with dozens of hours of gameplay. With no plans for DLC or expansions in the foreseeable future, the initial purchase offers a complete and fulfilling game. Larian Studio’s decision to exclude microtransactions further emphasizes this point, ensuring that players receive what they pay for upfront. Vincke’s perspective is that there is value in the game’s size and content, justifying its price and enabling the studio to sustain its operations while working on new projects.
Earlier this year, leaked documents from the Microsoft-Activision Blizzard merger shed light on the estimated cost of securing Baldur’s Gate 3 for PC Game Pass. The figure was approximately $5 million, which may have seemed reasonable at the time. However, the game’s tremendous success and critical acclaim since its release have proven it to be a bargain compared to the prices suggested for other titles. Subpar Batman spin-off Gotham Knights, for example, was estimated to cost $50 million, while the reboot of the fighting game Mortal Kombat 1 and the Star Wars action-adventure Jedi: Survivor were projected to reach $250 million and $300 million respectively.
Interestingly, Microsoft’s evaluation of Baldur’s Gate 3 seemed to underestimate its potential, referring to it as a “second-run Stadia PC RPG.” Even Larian Studios had doubts about the game’s success due to the niche nature of the CRPG genre. However, the game’s achievements and the positive reception from players have exceeded expectations. Vincke admitted that the success of Baldur’s Gate 3 both frightens and excites the studio, highlighting its significant impact on the gaming industry.
