Threads, the Twitter clone by Meta, is experiencing significant growth and increased engagement, according to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s latest insights shared during the Q4 2023 earnings announcement. Zuckerberg revealed that Threads now boasts 130 million monthly active users, surpassing its initial launch peak. This steady growth indicates that Threads has the potential to become a major success in the social media landscape.
In Meta’s Q3 earnings call, Zuckerberg had previously mentioned that Threads was nearing 100 million active users only four months after its launch. With the app’s expansion to European users in December, it was expected to gain an additional 26 million active users from that region alone. However, considering Threads’ current user base, it may not have reached the projected milestone of 200 million. Nonetheless, achieving 130 million active users in the early stages of the app is a significant achievement.
Comparing Threads to X
The success of Threads also prompts a comparison to X, which currently claims to have around 500 million monthly active users. While Threads currently sees only around a quarter of X’s usage, it’s important to acknowledge that X has years of established user behaviors and community building on its side. Many users, despite Elon Musk’s controversial statements, are still attached to the platform for their interactions. Additionally, half of the most followed profiles on X have not even created a Threads account. Thus, Threads has a long way to go in becoming a critical consideration for users, particularly in the sports community where X remains dominant.
Potential Challenges for X
Recent rumors suggest that Elon Musk’s financial troubles, including the loss of his $55 billion pay package from Tesla, could impact X’s ability to cover its expenses. The bird app’s operating margins are already tight, despite Musk’s efforts to cut costs and personnel. With its ad revenue still down 50% due to advertisers distancing themselves from Musk’s statements, X’s prospects appear uncertain. Any further setbacks in funding could have a significant impact on the platform’s future, especially considering its 55% decline in ad intake among top brands during the Super Bowl.
While it may be unfair to compare Threads and X directly due to their different stages of development, it is a logical comparison in terms of Threads’ focus. However, Threads aims to differentiate itself from X by taking a divergent approach to user engagement. Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri recently hinted at future features for Threads, including trending topics and lists. Although these updates could make Threads resemble Twitter more closely, Mosseri cautioned that highly requested features might not influence user behavior significantly. Only time will tell if these developments help Threads gain a stronger foothold in the social media landscape.
Positive Outlook
Despite the challenges it faces, Threads is building a platform that provides value, with a solid user base from which it can expand over time. While its ultimate goal of surpassing X remains uncertain, Threads’ consistent growth and active user engagement indicate a promising trajectory. As the app refines its functionality and introduces new features, it has the potential to become a significant player in the real-time discussion app market. The journey ahead may be challenging, but the signs currently point towards a positive future for Threads.
