The feature was first discovered by WABetaInfo, a reliable source for WhatsApp updates and developments. According to the report, the feature is currently in development and is expected to be included in the upcoming WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.7.8 release. While beta testers are unable to access the feature at this time, WABetaInfo has provided a sneak peek of what users can expect when the feature is officially launched.
Upon implementing the voice note transcription feature, WhatsApp will prompt users to download an additional 150MB of data to their smartphones. This data will be used to support on-device speech recognition, ensuring that voice notes can be accurately transcribed within the app. By utilizing on-device processing, WhatsApp ensures user privacy and maintains its end-to-end encryption for message content. This approach also enables voice notes to be transcribed even when data connectivity is limited.
Interestingly, WhatsApp has already tested a similar feature on its iOS platform back in May 2023 with the release of version 23.9.0.70 of WhatsApp beta. The app provided users with the option to transcribe voice notes in different languages by downloading language packs onto their devices.
